Green Machine™ Redbud

a bright, clean green that remains vibrant throughout the growing season before transitioning to red tones in autumn. In early spring, pink pea-like flowers emerge along the bare branches in the characteristic cauliflorous blooming pattern—that wonderfully odd habit where flowers sprout directly from stems and trunk like something out of a tropical forest. The weeping habit makes this cultivar particularly useful in small gardens, foundation plantings, or as a specimen near patios where its cascading form can be appreciated up close. Growing to approximately 4-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, 'Green Machine' fits spaces where the straight species would overwhelm. The arching branches create natural visual interest without pruning, though the tree maintains its form best when given room to express its weeping character fully. As with all eastern redbuds, 'Green Machine' requires well-drained soil and will decline rapidly in wet or poorly aerated conditions. The tree adapts to full sun or partial shade, though flowering performance peaks with more sun exposure. As a member of Cercis canadensis , 'Green Machine' provides critical early-season resources when pollinators emerge hungry after winter. The flat seed pods that persist into winter provide food for quail, pheasants, goldfinches, cardinals, and rose-breasted grosbeaks. Like all redbuds, the flowers are edible and rich in vitamin C, adding a peppery note to spring salads if you can bear to harvest them before the bees get their fill.
